Emma Toporowski J.D.

Emma Toporowski has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Victoria, where she majored in Philosophy. She graduated with Distinction and received the President’s Scholarship, which is gifted to academically outstanding undergraduate students.  

After graduating from the University of Victoria, Emma attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. In her first year, Emma became passionate about criminal law and began volunteering for Student Legal Services, an organization that provides legal services to the low-income community. After Emma’s first year, she returned to Student Legal Services for two consecutive years in the capacity of full-time Dayleader, where she was responsible for overseeing and mentoring junior volunteers. Through this role, she gained invaluable experience both inside and outside the courtroom, learning the complexities of handling criminal files under the supervision of respected criminal defence lawyers. In recognition of Emma’s ongoing commitment to Student Legal Services, she received the Class of 1971 Award, which is gifted to students who demonstrate leadership within the organization. 

Apart from Student Legal Services, Emma also served as a member of the Women’s Law Forum’s Philanthropy Committee, where she fundraised for Kindred House, an organization that assists individuals who work in the street-based sex trade. Throughout attending law school, she enjoyed mentoring first-year law students and indigenous high school students who were interested in the criminal justice system. Over the summer of her second year, Emma had the opportunity to conduct research for Steven Penney, a criminal law professor at the University of Alberta.  

Once Emma graduated from law school at the University of Alberta, she went on to complete a prestigious clerkship at the Alberta Court of Justice, Criminal Division. During her clerkship, it was her responsibility to complete research for the Justices that preside in Edmonton and the surrounding regions.  After completing her clerkship, Emma completed her articles at Purser Law, before joining the firm as an associate in late 2024.
